After the falling of the Anuradhapura Kingdom, Polonaruwa became Sri Lanka’s first capital in the 11th century AD. It is now a city famous for its ancient ruins. Major attractions include one that rises to 3.5m, believed to be a statue of the king Parakramabahu, Potgul Vehehra, Vatadage relic house, Gal potha or stone book, Kiri Vehera, Nelum Pokuna, and many more. Don’t miss the Archeological Museum. Polonaruwa is located 238km from Colombo. Can be accessed via Chilaw.
