A historic epicenter of a great 600 ft, ancient rock monastery in the 3rd century BC and a fortress / palace of King Kasyapa, in the 5th century. Sigiriya meaning Lion Rock, where large, stone lion paws adorn the rock face and beautiful frescoes of the King’s alleged concubines are embedded within its interior walls. More attractions include the rock summit and surrounding ancient water systems, ponds, moats and gardens. Named a world heritage site by UNESCO, Sigiriya is located 165km from Colombo and can be accessed via Ambepussa and Kurunegala routes.
